Keeping Costs Down Whilst Travelling

Whether you're visiting family or taking the children for a much earned holiday, travelling is never the most stress-free of events to plan for, especially when budget and money limits are a concern. With this in mind, here are a few quick tips that should help keep any family trip down in costs.

Transport

Obviously you need a means to get somewhere. Not every family has a car, as it can be an impractical expense to keep on an annual basis. Yet, when planning a trip such as this, you can always hire a car. The cost of hiring car is often cheaper than having to pay for a full family to travel by train, for instance. It’s also less stressful and easier to keep track of people when in a car.

Additionally, you can get quite cheap insurance if you know where to look. Taking the time to look at your car hire excess insurance, will find the best way to protect yourself against the excess; sometimes it’s better to pay a small additional cost now rather than suffer a large excess should the worst happen.

Accommodation

If you're staying at a friend or relatives, this isn't a problem, but for most cases accommodation is going to be a major expense. This can be difficult depending on the number of family and children with you but, in short, if you're looking to keep costs down, remember that hotels aren't the only option.

Whilst a small bed and breakfast might not be ideal for smaller children and families, there are the likes of motels and cheaper accommodation to consider. In all cases, these are usually just bathroom and bedrooms, so the overall effect is the same, yet the price is vastly cheaper. Since you're driving, you don't need to worry about the location as much, either. Sometimes it’s cheaper to find accommodation a little out of town, for instance.

Other Costs

The two main costs for any journey are usually accommodation and transport. Between the right accommodation choices and travel options, including cheap car insurance, you can generally cut down most the expenses. That said, there's always other options to take too.

Most of these concern your costs throughout your trip. This includes the likes of where you eat, for instance. You don't need to eat out all the time; doing this three times a day could be costly in it’s own right.
